From your first seed to your first harvest: a practical, no-nonsense guide to growing cannabis at home. Covers equipment setup, strain selection, training techniques, nutrient schedules, and the critical art of drying and curing.
Indoor gives you full environmental control (light cycles, temperature, humidity) and enables year-round harvests — but requires equipment investment. Outdoor uses free sunlight and natural soil but is limited to one or two harvests per year, weather permitting. Autoflowering strains are ideal for outdoor growers in short-season climates.
Photoperiod strains flower when daylight drops below ~12 hours — you control the switch indoors. Autoflowers begin flowering automatically after 3-4 weeks regardless of light cycle, making them faster (8-10 weeks seed to harvest) and simpler for beginners. Trade-off: photoperiod strains typically produce higher yields and more complex terpene profiles.
Soil is the most forgiving medium — it buffers pH and nutrients naturally, producing the best flavor. Coco coir offers faster growth with hydroponic-like control while retaining some soil-like forgiveness. Full hydroponics (DWC, RDWC, NFT) maximize growth speed and yield but require precise pH and EC monitoring — one mistake can be catastrophic.
Cannabis needs NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) plus calcium, magnesium, and micronutrients. Vegetative stage: high nitrogen (e.g., 3-1-2). Flowering stage: high phosphorus and potassium (e.g., 1-3-3). Always start at ¼-½ the manufacturer's recommended dose — overfeeding (nutrient burn) is the #1 beginner mistake.
LST (low-stress training): bend and tie branches to create an even canopy — more bud sites get light. Topping: cut the main stem to split growth into two main colas. SCROG (screen of green): weave branches through a horizontal net for maximum light exposure. Defoliation: strategically remove fan leaves to improve airflow and light penetration.
Harvest when 70-90% of trichomes are milky white with some amber (more amber = more sedative effects). Dry slowly at 60-70°F and 45-55% humidity for 7-14 days — stems should snap, not bend. Cure in airtight glass jars, burping daily for the first 2 weeks, then weekly. Properly cured cannabis improves in flavor and smoothness for up to 6 months.
