Is weed legal in Pattaya?
Pattaya follows Thailand's 2025 re-regulation: cannabis is classified for medical use rather than fully recreational. The dispensaries that multiplied after the 2022 decriminalization still operate throughout the city, and tourists access them via a brief on-site medical consultation. However, Pattaya is Thailand's most aggressive enforcement city for public-order offenses — the nightlife-focused police presence means the rules here are applied more strictly than in Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Treat it as a tolerated-but-gray area and consume discreetly.
Where to find dispensaries
Dispensaries cluster along Walking Street (the main nightlife zone), Beach Road, and Second Road. You will also find shops around Jomtien to the south and near the larger hotels. Pattaya has a high density of shops relative to its size, but the quality spectrum is extreme — this is the most tourist-trap-prone cannabis market in Thailand.
Prioritize dispensaries that show lab testing certificates (THC/CBD content and contaminant screening) and can name the strain's lineage. Shops that sell mystery "Pattaya special" flower at premium prices, or push edibles with no dosage labeling, should be avoided.
[!WARNING] Pattaya's nightlife zones are heavily policed and studded with undercover officers. Never buy from street dealers, beach vendors, or anyone offering cannabis inside or outside go-go bars and nightclubs. These offers are frequently synthetic cannabinoids (K2/spice), fake product, or direct police setups that end in fines or extortion. Only buy inside a licensed storefront dispensary.
How to buy
Present your passport at the dispensary for the medical certification record. Staff run a short consultation, register you, and issue a cannabis card valid for your stay. Choose from flower, pre-rolls, edibles, and extracts. Payment is cash (Thai baht) — Walking Street has ATMs but they carry fees and withdrawal limits, so carry enough baht.
Prices and quality
Pattaya prices sit between Bangkok and Phuket, but the value-for-quality ratio is the worst in Thailand because of the tourist-trade dynamic:
- Local Thai flower: 350–550 THB per gram (€9–15)
- Imported/US genetics: 700–1,100 THB per gram (€18–29)
- Pre-rolls: 200–450 THB
- Edibles: 600–1,400 THB (verify dosage — unlabeled edibles are common and dangerous)
Quality is genuinely inconsistent. A shop selling premium-looking imported genetics may be selling old, poorly stored product. Inspect flower for mold and moisture before buying, and prefer shops with high turnover (fresh stock) over quiet, dusty storefronts.
Where you can consume
Public consumption is not legal and is enforced more strictly in Pattaya than anywhere else in Thailand:
- Do not consume on Beach Road, Walking Street, or Pattaya Beach — tourist police actively patrol these areas
- Avoid consumption in bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and night markets
- Hotel rooms are the safest option, but many Pattaya hotels prohibit all smoking including cannabis and impose cleaning fees or eviction — check the policy first
- A small number of dispensaries have on-site consumption areas; ask before buying
Laws and penalties
- Public consumption carries nuisance fines of 5,000–25,000 THB, and Pattaya's tourist police enforce these actively, especially on Walking Street and Beach Road.
- Driving under the influence is a serious offense with roadside saliva testing common on Pattaya's main roads at night.
- Possession of larger quantities (hundreds of grams) can be treated as intent to supply and prosecuted criminally.
- Importing or exporting cannabis through U-Tapao Airport is a trafficking offense with severe prison sentences.
- Pattaya has a reputation for on-the-spot fine negotiations with police — if stopped, stay calm, be polite, do not admit to dealing, and request an official receipt for any fine paid.
